Damaged floors and walls in government schools compromise safety and aesthetics. Uneven surfaces can cause accidents, while damaged walls disrupt classroom activities. Repairing these structural issues is vital for creating a safe and conducive learning environment.
Inadequate seating is a major issue in government schools. Students often lack individual benches, leading to discomfort and difficulty in maintaining focus. Providing sufficient seating is crucial for creating a conducive learning environment.
The R N Malhotra & Anna R Malhotra Charitable Trust was established to take up charitable activities for the disadvantaged and underserved communities, both children and adults, in rural and urban areas. The trust has been set up in the names of former RBI Governor R N Malhotra and his wife Anna R Malhotra, the first woman to fight great odds to be selected into the Indian Administrative Service.
To take their legacy forward, we are first starting with working for underserved primary school children in government schools in both rural and urban areas. The timing could not be more right. We are at a stage where the pre-existing learning gaps in government primary schools have magnified post-Covid. The number of school children coming to school has dropped significantly and learning outcomes have suffered further due to the pandemic because children did not have the digital means to attend online classes.
The R N Malhotra & Anna R Malhotra Charitable Trust has taken the mandate to improve the quality of education in primary schools and started the initiative YuvaVidya, the umbrella under which all education initiatives will be undertaken.
At a later point in time, the trust will start projects and initiatives in other critical areas like health and meeting other requirements of the economically weaker sections.
According to an ASER survey (Annual Status of Education Report), 55% of fifth-grade children in public schools cannot read a second-grade textbook. They lag in English speaking/reading skills and numeracy. So, the trust will focus on improving the learning outcomes in Maths, English and tech skills of primary school children from Grade 1 to 5 in government schools.
In our humble endeavor, we aim to uplift primary school education for the underserved by focusing on age-appropriate teaching and fostering a quality learning environment. Our goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, receives a fair chance to succeed and excel.
Within a select number of rural schools in Faridabad, our primary focus is on enhancing students’ performance in two critical subjects: Maths and English, through activity-based teaching and experiential learning. Our initiative has led to a significant improvement in Mathematics and English performance in our classes of 4 and 5 across schools. For instance, in Mohbtabad, while comparing the baseline test results with the endline test results, the class average improved from 25% to 66% in English and 29% to 65% in Maths in Class 4. For Class 5 in Mohbtabad, the class average improved from 48% to 78% in English and 46% to 78% in Maths. The language barrier presents a challenge, as English is not commonly spoken at home or in school. However, we aim to bridge this gap effectively through conducting multiple teacher training sessions during the year. YuvaVidya has a twin objective to strengthen rural education and create employment for qualified local teachers, fostering respect and financial independence.
At YuvaVidya, the Trust’s education initiative, we understand that transforming the entire landscape of school education is a monumental task. Nonetheless, we are dedicated to our mission of uplifting these rural schools and empowering students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. There is an urgent need to improve the English and Maths standards of children post Covid, especially because underprivileged children could not attend online classes during the pandemic.

Our initiative YuvaVidya aims to empower the underserved with age-appropriate teaching and tech-led quality education through a transformation in primary school learning. Since the problem in India is gigantic, demanding huge resources, we have adopted a partnership approach with other like-minded and professional NGOs working in this field.
For over 30 years, the NGO Katha has been working to transform education for the underserved through the tech-led education approach. They have a unique storytelling method to teach the NCERT syllabus and build their reading/writing and Maths skills. Katha primarily works in teacher training, entrepreneurship, vocational skills training, publishing age-appropriate storybooks and women empowerment. Through different initiatives, Katha benefitted over 10.4 million children, youth and women across India. Katha runs schools for the disadvantaged in 252 slums of Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra and Haryana.
Establishing Creative Learning Centres to build strong foundational skills in rural government schools. Varitra Foundation is an NGO by dedicated, seasoned managers. In our partnership with Varitra, we aim to strengthen and enhance age-appropriate English and numeracy skills of children from economically weaker communities.
Varitra and R N Malhotra & Anna R Malhotra Charitable Trust will work together to improve the quality of education in a few rural schools in Faridabad by training and providing qualified teachers locally. These special classes will be held after school hours and continue even in an environment like Covid in village chaupals. We plan to expand this work to many more rural schools in Haryana.
In addition to improving the numeracy and English skills of children, teachers will focus on their holistic development through co-curricular activities like sports, drama etc. The teachers will work on enhancing communication skills and making students confident individuals. The teachers will also work with children’s parents and the community to sensitise them on the importance of education, so that they enthusiastically support their children.
Set up three years ago, Varitra Foundation is a credible name in the social sector. They run programmes in rural areas to improve the quality of education for primary school children in Government schools. The Varitra team focuses on children in villages near Karnal in Haryana and plan to expand the programme with the R N Malhotra & Anna R Malhotra Charitable Trust to villages in the Faridabad district. In the rural areas of Karnal, Varitra has worked with 20 schools, covering more than 5000 children and establishing 20 libraries to inculcate the reading habit in children, give them strong foundational skills, to help them build a brighter future. Varitra is running programmes on building leadership skills in rural youth by designing and providing leadership opportunities and mentorship. They also empower men and women to redefine gender roles in their communities and strive for their social and economic independence.
We have previously partnered with credible and dynamic NGOs to raise the learning levels of government school children through a combination of traditional teaching, activity-based teaching and tech-led education. The Trust helped underserved students achieve new heights through age-appropriate education and empowering them by teaching topics through projects on computers. This experiential learning has given them new exposure and made learning fun, interactive and easy to understand.
While our involvement in the past projects has concluded, we celebrate the past achievements of our tech learning classes. In a few urban municipal schools in South Delhi, we conducted a year-long tech-led learning initiative, meticulously measuring its impact on students’ educational journey.
Bridging Educational Divides, Transforming Futures!
Through our journey starting from 2022, we have been on a transformative path of providing remedial classes to hundreds of children in Classes 4 and 5 across clusters of villages (five villages) in rural Faridabad. The attempt is to improve the English and Maths standards of the children through year-long activity-based learning, for a sustained period.
In the villages of Pali, Mohbtabad, Pawata and Dhauj, our dedicated efforts have brought educational opportunities to the forefront. Our commitment extended beyond the classroom as we collaborated with the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Faridabad to repair broken floors in the government primary school of Dhauj, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.
The National Education Policy 2020 has stressed the importance of enhancing school students’ Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills through computer-aided teaching methods, as well as activity-based and experiential learning. From 2023, all State governments are following the National Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Mission, in which there is increased focus on activity-based teaching in primary schools and enhancing the knowledge and understanding of children in English and Maths. As a trust, we strongly believe that every child deserves a quality education and a chance to succeed in a highly competitive environment. It also prepares them as they grow up in an increasingly tech-dependent world, seeing rapid shifts in growth industries, the emergence of sunrise industries, and changing work requirements.
With the help of ICT, teachers can easily explain complex situations to the student and help to retain the information better, remembering the visual explanation of a particular situation for a longer time. Moreover, since the learning process becomes interactive and comprehensive, it sparks an interest in students leading to greater attentiveness and attendance at schools. It creates an environment that is conducive to learning.

The project, which will recommence in July and continue till the end of the academic session, aims to create a lasting impact on young minds.
